http://www.storybee.org/4through9/4through9.html
Listen to WONDERFUL stories online told by professional storytellers. When students come in from recess and are taking a few minutes to cool off and get drinks and use the restrooms, a story from this website is often playing. They listen as they enter the room. The stories are great and the storytelling is fantastic. We are considering having our own storytelling celebration!

More great storybooks to read online. Can't get enough of these.
http://themoonlitroad.com/
The Moonlit Road is a storytelling journey down the dark and mysterious back roads of the American South. Each month, this site features odd and spooky folktales from throughout the South (both text and streaming audio versions), told by some of the region's best storytellers. Each story also features a cultural background area where you can learn about where the story came from.. (I haven't listened to all of these. . .parents might want to listen or read first to make sure they aren't too spooky.)
http://www.readtomelv.com/current-books/
More great books read aloud while you follow along. The reading is dynamic!

http://www.lexipedia.com
This site is so cool because when you type in a word, it will give you a whole web of words. Each word has a different colored dot by it. Over to the left of the page, you'll see a key that will tell you what each color means. For example, blue words are adjectives, green words are synonyms, etc. How cool is that! It's a great thesaurus/dictionary to use online.
http://www.snappywords.com
.This next site is like lexipedia, but it is not color-coded , nor does it give as many options for words. Still kind of cool, though.
http://www.wordhippo.com
I love, love this next site. You can type in a word and decide if you want the definition, synonym, antonym, it can pronounce the word for you, show you a picture, and even gives you sentences using the words!
http://www.yourdictionary.com
This next dictionary is awesome! Sometimes I look up a word in the dictionary and the definition has such big words that I have to look up other words to figure out the definition of the first word! This dictionary gives simple, easy to understand definitions with examples. I'll be using this all the time next year!
http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/dictionary.html
Hey, all you math fans--a dictionary just for you! This dictionary gives you the definitions of math terms with pictures to help define the terms. LOVE IT!
http://blachan.com/shahi/
This site gives photographs/pictures to go with the word. I have to admit, I'm not sure how some of the pictures actually match the word, but it's fun to try to figure that out. I don't love this site as much as I do lexipedia but could be helpful in understanding the meanings of words.
www.wordle.net
Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes.
http://www.tagxedo.com
This site is like wordle but just a tiny bit more complicated (although, I still like it better.) It's Wordle but kicked up a level. The image to the left is one that I created in about 1 minute. You can put words into shapes. There are so many options but the coolest option is that you can save it as a jpeg (that's a technical term for "clipart" or "picture") making easy to print, save, email! (Note: It apparently doesn't do numbers, because I typed in 2nd Grade, but it only printed the ndGrade.) Another hint: if you want two words to stay together you can't put spaces--just put a capital letter at the beginning of each word.

This site is the Footprints for Life program that we host each year. It's a great prgram that teaches children to make good choices, deal appropriately with conflicts, and how to be safe.
